After the 2011 February earthquake we got heavily involved in the initial reopening of the Christchurch CBD. Part of this was designing and setting up an architecturally significant cafe out of three forty foot containers within the Re:start Mall. The project was incredibly pressed with the date of the 29th of October 2011 set for the opening. With the date being heavily advertised and the Prime Minister coming down to open the mall, there was no room for a contingency plan. While the Prime Minister was delivering his speech, the gas fitters were furiously installing the hobs and grill, and with minutes to spare we were open. We didn’t get locks on the doors until three days later! Although the project was initially given a time frame of six months, we heavily invested and put in a full functioning kitchen.
With this café we created a new well rounded full-on coffee blend with depth called Re:START and decided to donate 30 cents per 200 gram pack to help initially rebuild then re-equip and restart the badly damaged Court Theatre. We were staggered at the amount we raised in a couple of years – over $120,000.
Oddfellow’s is our café attached to our Addington roastery. Operating out of the old Oddfellow’s Hall built in 1878 and taken over and lovingly restored by us in 2004, the café is a locals’ favourite and popular with business people who like to meet up with friends or hold meetings.
We love this place as it’s steeped in history and the fantastic wooden floor, herringbone ceiling and hand-forged struts are quite special. Our fantastic Oddfellow’s mural inspired by the letterhead found in a time capsule under the old hall when we started works is quite intriguing and rather different. Fresh food made daily and great coffee make for a wonderful place to come and relax and enjoy yourself.
