Vote for Good with Forest & Bird

More than 100 years of mahi

You probably know Forest & Bird as the organisation behind Bird of the Year. But their work goes far beyond the (world famous) bird competition. With 44 branches, 37 reserves, and more than 120 national and grassroots conservation projects, Forest & Bird is protecting and restoring nature across the motu.

Every day, Forest & Bird’s branches, members, supporters, and staff speak up for nature and put in the hard yards to protect and restore it.

A specialist legal team and conservation advocacy managers are speaking up for nature in the courts and at all levels of government, while a network of Kiwi Conservation Clubs and Youth Hubs are empowering the next generation of nature lovers.

The breadth of Forest & Bird’s conservation mahi makes them unique among environmental NGOs.

Why is their work important?

The twin crises of climate change and biodiversity loss are hitting Aotearoa New Zealand’s iconic wildlife and wild places hard.

New Zealand has the highest proportion of threatened species anywhere in the world, with 75 percent of indigenous birds, bats, reptiles and freshwater fish threatened with, or at risk of, extinction. Habitat loss and extreme weather events are putting immense pressure on ecosystems and species found nowhere else on Earth.

As Forest & Bird's CE Nicola Toki says, “Now more than ever, we need to recognise the value of nature's solutions and invest for a sustainable return. We know that nature will protect us, keep us safe and help us thrive – but only if we protect and restore nature first.”

Between 2012 and 2018 alone, the net loss of native vegetation was equivalent to more than half of Abel Tasman National Park. This represents the erosion of our natural heritage - the places and creatures that make Aotearoa unique.

Forest & Bird’s work spans incredible success stories that show what is possible when we get conservation right. They’re working toward a future where stepping outside means hearing a deafening dawn chorus of abundant tūi, kākā, pīwakawaka and korimako living alongside us in urban centres. A place where we can drink clean water and swim in clean rivers. Where native fish are no longer on the threatened species list. And regenerating native forests allow biodiversity and landscapes to thrive.

This is what Forest & Bird is working toward every single day, helping tackle climate change by advocating for nature-based solutions and better protections for our wild places.

“Ultimately, the keystone in our ecosystem of building back better and tackling climate change is people”, says Nicola. “It’s all of us, banding together, that makes change possible."

How your vote has an impact

By voting for Forest & Bird in Hummingbird Coffee’s Vote for Good campaign you’ll directly support their mahi. Whether it's funding hands-on habitat restoration, supporting legal challenges, protecting conservation land, or education programmes that inspire the next generation of conservationists, every dollar makes a difference.

Nature is the foundation of everything we value about Aotearoa New Zealand. Many of our incredible wildlife and wild places are not found anywhere else on earth. Your support will help Forest & Bird keep giving nature a voice and protecting what makes our country special everyday.

You can vote for Forest & Bird through our Instagram stories @Hummingbirdcoffee. Because just like we believe passionately in Fairtrade coffee that creates positive change at origin, we believe in supporting organisations that are creating positive change right here at home.
